Costa Cálida - Communications

The investments made to improve and expand roads, especially in the hundreds of kilometres of highways, has not only enhanced the transportation within the Murcia region, but also between the Region and the rest of Spain.

Highways

The Region of Murcia is connected with the rest of Spain via a series of modern highways and toll roads.

  • Towards the south, Murcia connects with Andalusia via the A-92 and E-15 highways to Granada and Almeria respectively.
  • Highway A3-301 to Albacete and Madrid. The capital of Spain is merely 3 hours and 30 minutes from Murcia on highway A-3
  • The connection with the Mediterranean Arc, Alicante and Valencia, is via the interior highway E-15 or on the N-332 road, along the coast, from Cartagena.
  • The trip Cartagena-Alicante along the coast can be made using highway A-7, to Catalonia
  • There are daily buses from Murcia to the main Spanish cities (Alicante, Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, San Sebastian, Vitoria, Pamplona and Logrono, among others) and to other international destinations.

Train

Train access to the Region of Murcia is possible from any point in Spain on daily trains connecting through Madrid and from other locations in Europe connecting through Barcelona.

Arrivals and departures take place at the Carmen Train Station, in the city of Murcia. There is also a commuter train (FEVE) that runs from Cartagena to Los Nietos.

The railway infrastructure will soon be expanded with the incorporation of the High Speed Line (AVE) that will connect Murcia with Madrid and the Valencia Community. This will add another important economic element to the region that will translate into:

  • Decreased travel times
  • Possibility to easily transport a larger number of travellers

Seaport

Cartagena's Seaport, located along the axis of important commercial and passenger Mediterranean routes, welcomes a large number of visitors from leisure cruises and private ships all year long as it offers all the services needed on a voyage stopover.

Because of this, the Region of Murcia is becoming a more essential port of call in Mediterranean sailings.

Furthermore, Cartagena's Seaport now has a new dock for luxury yachts. With this new marina, Cartagena attracts a great number of luxury ships from all over the world that will create a new tourist market for Cartagena and the Region of Murcia.

Airport

The airport for the Region of Murcia (Murcia-San Javier Airport) is located 47 km from the city of Murcia in San Javier, near the Mar Menor. It connects the region with the rest of Spain and with major European capitals. In addition, a new airport is being planned in Corvera that will provide a modern national and international air transportation infrastructure.

Murcia-San Javier Airport:

  • Located on the northern bank of the Mar Menor 47 km from the capital.
  • It offers flights to major Spanish cities as well as regular and charter flights to other European destinations.
  • Its strategic location makes it an ideal arrival point for destinations in the Costa Calida. It is ideal as well for its proximity to the city of Murcia, only 25 minutes away on the Murcia-San Javier highway
  • Also, one may travel from the El Altet Airport in Alicante, 68 km from the city of Murcia, a 45 minute drive. There are taxi and bus services for travel to Murcia.

New Projects

The project for the construction of the new airport is already underway. Located in Corvera, 20 minutes from the city of Murcia and only 15 minutes from the Mar Menor, it will provide the Region with modern national and international transportation infrastructure. This project will help manage the developing tourism and commercialism while satisfying internal and external demands.

Additionally, it will soon include a High Speed Line (AVE) that will connect Murcia with Madrid and the Community of Valencia. This new railway line will also offer a solution that will satisfy internal and external demands.
